Rencontre forgerons francophones au MEN suite à SL 2008

Suite à Solutions Linux, et à la première rencontre un peu informelle sur le stand de Bull, nous (participants à la liste forges@picolibre.int-evry.fr) avons pu nous réunir de façon plus posée et approfondie (sur une grosse matinée, et avec plus de gens), au Ministère de l’Éducation Nationale (merci à eux d’avoir prêté la salle), pour prolonger la dynamique de contacts autour des forges.

La réunion a permis d’aborder de nombreux sujets :

  • tour de table des présents et résumé des épisodes précédents (la liste, hephaistos, etc.). Présentations rapides des différentes forges représentées (GForge, Codex, NovaForge, LibreSource, PicoForge, etc.), et des différents utilisateurs ou prestataires
  • courte discussion sur la définition des “forges”, vs groupware, vs etc.
  • historique du projet GForge (par Roland Mas, Christian Bayle et le reste de la salle ;), et réflexions sur le processus de maintenance évolution du projet, la gouvernance, le devenir potentiel, etc.
  • présentations de contributions éventuelles possibles des participants au projet GForge, discussions sur l’interopérabilité
  • présentation par Olivier Abdoun, sur les forges “de nouvelle génération” reprenant des idées venant des projets QualiPSo et SCOrWare
  • différentes présentations des forges représentées (NovaForge, Codex, LibreSource)

Nous avons conclu en réfléchissant à l’avenir : collaborations entre présents, organisation de nouvelles rencontres (suite Hephaistos ?), élargissement à d’autres projets et à l’international.

Je pense que tous les participants sont repartis avec beaucoup d’enseignements, et la volonté de collaborer, notamment, à court terme, autour de contributions à GForge, et vers l’interopérabilité entre forges.

Forges @Solutions Linux 2008 : affluence… le sujet semble d’actualité

Cet après-midi, nous avions organisé une petite concentration de pas mal d’acteurs intéressés par le sujet des forges de développement logiciel, suite aux discussions qui ont eu lieu sur la liste hébergée sur picolibre.

Le sujet des forges semble d’actualité : pas mal de gens partagent des constats similaires, et se posent la question de l’interopérabilité ou de la mutualisation des efforts de développement, notamment autour du projet GForge. Ce type de rencontres pourrait aider à redonner un peu de vie au projet GForge, qui semblait un peu à l’arrêt pour pas mal d’observateurs, bien qu’il soit très utilisé.

Il y avait donc cet après-midi, sur le stand de Bull (qui avait proposé d’accueillir cette rencontre, et nous a fait une démo de Novaforge) quelques mainteneurs de GForge et plusieurs contributeurs potentiels : un bon début.

Je pense qu’il faut favoriser ce type de rencontres physiques qui aident à mieux se connaître et à mieux discuter des problèmes et solutions que par mail ou autres moyens “virtuels”. De prochaines rencontres à prévoir, dès demain, avec les mêmes et quelques autres, profitant d’une présence parisienne de pas mal de gens, mais aussi très probablement durant le premier semestre, de façon plus planifiée, annoncée, organisée. Peut-être sous la bannière des deuxièmes rencontres Hephaïstos ?

Report from the Hephaistos Conference

As you know from previous posts, I’ve attended much of the recently held Hephaistos Conference, and presented there our experience on developping PicoForge and using Shibboleth.

I was glad to see many interesting presentations and talking to all these people interested in Forges, either promoters of the use of forges for specific communities, or developers/maintainers of forge software.

I’d like to report on some of the bits I remember, hoping that others will provide their reports too.

First of all, I think that the organisers have organised a great conference, for a first edition, and the only criticism may be that I would have prefered to be able to talk to more people from Mandriva there, as the conf was held at Mandriva’s building. Too bad… maybe next time.

Several people were present from Public Administrations or institutions related to this sector, who try and promote the use of the libre software model for developments in the public administrations sector : folks from the Adullact’s forge, and Admisource (the official french administration’s one), or the forge of the Junta in Extremadura, and also someone from Sweden, and even a representative of the IDABC program.

Being able to discuss questions of interoperability was the main topic of interest for me. Some elements have been shown like the search facility between partner forges implemented in GForge, and used by the GForges relating to PA projects, for instance (Hephaestos project at Adullact). Recent activity was made around this topic like discussions in the frame of the Overcrowded initiative, and older bits like our proposals for CoopX.

I think we have discussed interesting ideas like using Web 2.0 techniques also in the forges, things like tagging / taxonomy for projects identification / categorisation, maybe.

Some presentations have provided us with interesting perspective on software development and integration basing on J2EE components, and in particular on ObjectWeb’s technology, like what the IRCAD did with xwiki and other tools. Also, using similar technologies were the elements proposed by the LibreSource project. I think they have developped a very interesting tool, which could be a solid basis for building forges of next generation, but whose paths for adoption by projects in the libre software communities remain to be confirmed.

There would be lots of other elements to note, but I must say I don’t remember that much at the present time, and let others contribute in the comments 😉

Last, we mentioned that we (at GET/INT) are hosting a mailing-list which was setup in the frame of the “overcrowded” project, which is meant for improving contacts between people involved in the field of forges, like maintainers of several forge applications. At the moment there are mostly french-speaking people, but we’re inviting all interested parties to join us… and maybe we can continue with discussions in english. The program of the Hephaistos conference has been announced.

It seems I’ll have to present something, then, as our paper on Shibboleth and PicoForge has been selected.

Hope to see you there and discuss the subject of forges.

FYI, the location is not defined yet, but should be in Paris most probably. You may register anyway now, in order to plan for the right facilities (and note the gala dinner is an extra 25 euros which can be paid on location, with limited room : register early 😉
